Aston Villa forward nets in Portugal’s victory over Cyprus

Aston Villa forward Diana Silva was on the scoresheet for Portugal as they won 3-0 in Cyprus in their latest UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 qualifying match this evening.

The 25-year-old netted the second goal of the evening for Francisco Neto’s side as they kept the pressure on group leaders Finland.

Silva played the first 79 minutes of the match before being replaced by Ana Leite. The attacker moved to within one appearance of her 60th for her country at senior level this evening.

Claudia Neto’s 19-minute goal gave Portugal the lead at the AEK Arena in Larnaca. Cyprus then held firm for the remainder of the half despite further pressure from the visitors as the scoreline remained 1-0 at the break.

Portugal doubled their lead early in the second half with Villa forward Silva on target. Neto’s side completed their three-goal victory in second half stoppage time when Ana Capeta struck the final goal of the game.

The result sees Portugal move onto seven points, three points behind group leaders Finland and one point ahead of Scotland who are in action later this evening. Villa forward Silva will be hoping to put in another great performance when Portugal face Cyprus in the return fixture in Estoril on Tuesday evening.
