Chelsea defender Magda Eriksson will not only potentially book her place on the plane to England 2022 should Sweden defeat Iceland in Gothenburg tomorrow evening, she will also reach a personal milestone for her country.
The Swedes will qualify for the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 with a game to spare should they defeat nearest challengers Iceland at the Gamla Ullevi Stadium. Despite Sweden potentially moving six points clear of Iceland with a victory tomorrow evening with their opponents having two games remaining, Peter Gerhardsson’s side would qualify for the finals courtesy of a better head-to-head record.
For Chelsea defender Eriksson, she is not only on the verge of securing yet another major tournament appearance with her country, victory over Iceland will also see her celebrate her 40th win as a senior international player.
Eriksson made her senior debut for Sweden in a 3-0 friendly defeat to France in Amiens in early 2014. Since her maiden outing for Sweden over six-and-a-half years’ ago, the defender has gone on to make 64 further appearances for her country, scoring eight goals. The player was most recently on the scoresheet in Sweden’s last match, a 7-0 qualifying victory over Latvia in Gothenburg on Friday.
The Chelsea ace has played every single minute of Sweden’s qualifying campaign so far while she has contributed an impressive three goals to the cause. It has been an exceptional campaign on a personal note for Eriksson and she will be hoping to help her country sign-off with two more victories to maintain their perfect record.
