Arsenal duo Manuela Zinsberger and Viktoria Schnaderbeck helped Austria to record a goalless draw with France in their latest UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 qualifier in Wiener Neustadt this evening.
The Austrians knew that a positive result was required against the French to ensure that they remained level with Corinne Diacre’s side and they did just that, frustrating the visitors throughout the 90 minutes.
Arsenal goalkeeper Zinsberger was in top form for Austria, recording 10 saves as she came out on top against the French attack time and time again. Her club teammate Schnaderbeck captained Irene Fuhrmann’s side and played the entire match for her country.
Zinsberger was called into action to deny both Aissatou Tounkara and Eugenie Le Sommer on a couple of occasions early on before saving Sarina Karchaoui and Kadidiatou Diani efforts. Carina Wenninger then registered a rare shot on goal for the hosts before Grace Geyoro failed to beat Zinsberger as the first half ended goalless.
France were guilty of some wayward finishing in the second half with Diani and Karchaoui the only players to test Zinsberger in normal time. The Austrian keeper was called upon again deep in injury time when she showed great composure to deny Amel Majri and Diani to claim her well-earned clean sheet.
The stalemate leaves both sides level at the top of their qualification group with 16 points and assured of at least a play-off place. France top the group courtesy of a better goal difference.
