Birmingham City midfielder Chloe McCarron scored her first senior international goal as Northern Ireland defeated the Faroe Islands 5-1 at Seaview in Belfast this evening in their final UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 qualifying match.
Kenny Shiels’ side needed a victory to make sure of their place in the play-offs and they did just that on what turned out to be the greatest night in Northern Irish women’s footballing history.
The hosts suffered a huge shock after just four minutes when the group minnows took the lead. Jensa Kannuberg Torolvsdottir netted what turned out to be the Faroe Islands’ only goal of UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 qualifying.
Northern Ireland swiftly responded and Liverpool midfielder Rachel Furness netted her fifth goal in as many matches to make it 1-1 with just six minutes on the clock before Kirsty McGuinness struck just before the half-hour to put the game in the home side’s favour.
Shiels’ side kicked-on in the second half and there was to be a first senior international goal for Birmingham City midfielder McCarron before Caitlin McGuinness found the back of the net as Northern Ireland took a 4-1 lead. The hosts’ victory was crowned two minutes from time when visiting defender Jacoba Langgaard netted an own goal.
Northern Ireland will now wait for the completion of the remaining UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 qualifying matches before learning of their play-off opponents.
