London City Lionesses and Chelsea no nearer to agreeing Conti Cup date

London City Lionesses and Chelsea remain undecided on when their FA Women’s Continental League Cup match will be played according to The Pride’s head coach Melissa Phillips.

The pair were due to meet at Princes Park in their final group match last month but the game was postponed due to positive COVID-19 tests in the home camp.

The game is very much a dead rubber encounter with Chelsea having already been confirmed as group winners and London City Lionesses ending their campaign bottom of the group. Rescheduling the game could prove tricky with Chelsea’s UEFA Women’s Champions League commitments taking up midweek slots ahead of the Christmas break.

When speaking to FA Women’s Super League Full-Time this morning, London City Lionesses head coach Phillips admitted that the two clubs are no closer to rescheduling the fixture. She hinted that the new date could be early in the New Year.

“There is no indication as of yet” said Phillips when asked about when the Chelsea fixture could be played. “We were looking to get the Charlton game rescheduled before the end of the year but there are some breaks in the New Year where we might be able to fit that one in.”

The original Chelsea fixture was called off just hours before kick-off with some of those attending the match having already began their journeys. Phillips went on to add that the decision was made to postpone the match following a hectic day of action at Princes Park.

She added “We had been on the phone with The FA all day looking at best and worst case scenarios and getting their guidance from it.

“Ultimately, I think that it was the right decision for the health and safety of everyone and I can’t thank our medical staff and The FA enough for their guidance and decision making on that process.

“Ultimately, we just wanted to make the right decision and I think we really did.”

London City Lionesses’ fixture against Chelsea is one of just two FA Women’s Continental League Cup group games still to be rescheduled. Charlton Athletic’s postponed fixture against Brighton & Hove Albion is also yet to be rearranged.
