London City Lionesses head coach Melissa Phillips believes that her side can carry their momentum from the 4-1 victory over Leicester City into their latest fixture against Coventry United on Sunday despite a break of more than a month since their last league fixture.
The Pride recorded their exceptional victory over the promotion-chasing Foxes on 1 November but have not played an FA Women’s Championship fixture since due to a combination of bad weather and the international break.
When speaking to FA Women’s Super League Full-Time earlier today, Phillips said that there is no reason why the club cannot carry over the feel-good factor into Sunday’s meeting with struggling Coventry United at Princes Park.
“I do actually think that we will take some of that Leicester momentum with us moving forward” the Lionesses head coach said. “It has definitely propelled us in training.
“With the break in games, we have been able to rest players, focus on individuals, small groups and functional training and for us, that is how we build our momentum.
“We know that Coventry will be tough opposition, they’re hard-working, they’re physical and as with every opponent in the league, it is about who turns up and performs the best on the day.”
With Dartford currently sitting in Tier 3 of the UK Government’s winter plan to continue the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, fans will again be locked out of Princes Park on Sunday, however, Phillips believes that the situation is moving in the right direction.
She added “I am ecstatic that fans will be allowed back into some women’s football stadiums at this point.
“It is disappointing that we are not allowed to have our fans just yet but we are making sure that everything is safe so that when we are ready to do so, we are able.
“It is fantastic for any team to have fans back in to allow us to continue to grow the game in the UK.”
London City Lionesses’ FA Women’s Championship fixture against Coventry United at Princes Park is scheduled to kick-off at 2pm on Sunday afternoon and will be available for fans to stream live on the FA Player.
