The 2018/2019 FA Women’s Championship season was one to remember for Manchester United fans as The Red Devils secured promotion to the top flight at the first attempt.
Casey Stoney’s side ended the season in pole position as they deservedly lifted the FA Women’s Championship title.
FA Women’s Super League Full-Time take a look back at a game from that season as Manchester United made the trip to Farley Way to face Leicester City.
United travelled to the East Midlands in fourth position in the FA Women’s Championship, although they were playing catch up on the rest of the league with two games in hand on their promotion rivals.
Stoney’s side quickly established a two-goal lead through a quick-fire double from Ella Toone. The youngster capitalised on a Leicester City error to net her first goal before soon slotting in her second after some good work from midfielder Mollie Green.
There were no further first half goals largely due to the exceptional form of home keeper Demi Lambourne who pulled off several saves including one from a Katie Zelem penalty kick.
Kirsty Hanson put United 3-0 up early in the second half with a close range finish before Alex Greenwood whipped in a fourth with a delicious free-kick.
There was nothing that Lambourne could do to keep Toone’s penalty kick out of the net in the 65th minute as Stoney’s side established a 5-0 lead with the teenager completing her hat-trick.
United were to add two further goals to their tally in the final 10 minutes of the match. First, the unfortunate Nat Johnson directed the ball into her own net before Toone netted her fourth goal with an excellent strike from distance as The Red Devils added gloss to their victory, a 7-0 win.
The three points moved Manchester United up to second place in the FA Women’s Championship table. They would not drop a single point in their remaining seven league games as they went on to win the title with relative ease.
