REWIND: Arsenal return to FAWSL summit with resounding victory at Liverpool

The 2018/2019 FA Women’s Super League campaign was one to remember for Arsenal who were crowned champions for the first time since 2012.

The Gunners ended up winning the title in style with a seven-point margin over nearest challengers Manchester City.

FA Women’s Super League Full-Time have dipped back into the archives to review a game from the 2018/2019 season. This time, we go back to Arsenal’s March 2019 visit to Prenton Park to face Liverpool.

Arsenal went into the match needing a victory to jump back above Manchester City into pole position in the FA Women’s Super League table and they got off to the perfect start when Kim Little fired in the opener from a Katie McCabe cross.

Two minutes later, it was 2-0 to Joe Montemurro’s side when Beth Mead’s shot somehow hit Liverpool keeper Anke Preuss and found it’s way into the back of the net.

Liverpool limited the damage to two goals until 20 minutes into the second half when Mead again got the better of Preuss with a mis-hit cross which looped in before Dominique Bloodworth added a fourth goal with a deflected headed effort.

Courtney Sweetman-Kirk then pulled a goal back for Liverpool from the penalty spot after Yana Daniels had been fouled in the area before Vivianne Miedema capped-off a 5-1 victory for Arsenal with a cheeky finish.

It was a simple victory for The Gunners who reclaimed their place at the top of the table. While Montemurro’s side had some luck with a couple of their goals, they were never in danger of not taking three points on Merseyside.

Less than two months later, Arsenal would end their seven-year wait for the title by confirming their status as champions.
