REWIND: Chelsea maintain perfect start with narrow victory over Liverpool

2017 FA Women’s Super League 1 Spring Series winners Chelsea went into the first ‘winter campaign’ in 2017/2018 looking to lift the regular season title.

The Blues won the 2017 stop-gap mini-season by a narrow margin and hopes were high at Kingsmeadow for another successful campaign in 2017/2018.

Chelsea started the season with back-to-back league victories ahead of a home meeting with Liverpool. FA Women’s Super League Full-Time go back through the archives to that game as we relive the action at Kingsmeadow.

The hosts started the match brightly and Ji So-yun struck an effort narrowly wide inside the opening five minutes.

Chelsea didn’t have to wait too long to make the breakthrough. After Gilly Flaherty had delivered the ball into the box from a free-kick, Liverpool failed to clear their lines and Maren Mjelde fired the ball home from 15 yards.

Karen Carney and Ji had opportunities to add to Chelsea’s slender advantage but they were unable to do so as Emma Hayes’ side dominated the first half.

The second half saw Magda Eriksson and Flaherty directed headers off target before a Mjedle effort from distance was kept out by visiting goalkeeper Siobhan Chamberlain. Substitute Eni Aluko had a late half-chance but was unable to take advantage. That missed opportunity counted for nothing though as Chelsea recorded a 1-0 victory, their third consecutive win of the season.

The Blues would go on to lift the FA Women’s Super League 1 title with a six-point advantage over second-placed Manchester City. They would remain unbeaten throughout all of their 18 matches.
