Former Manchester City winger Lucy Ashworth-Clifford has joined FA Women’s Championship club Lewes according to reports on the club’s official website.
The 21-year-old Bolton-born midfielder becomes The Rookettes boss Simon Parker’s second signing of the current transfer window with Lewes having also secured the services of former Brighton & Hove Albion forward Ini Umotong.
Lewes’ latest addition Ashworth-Clifford joins the club following a spell combining her football with her studies in the United States. The youngster has been a student at the Lamar University in Texas where she also represented their football team. Ashworth-Clifford recently returned to England and has therefore opted to further her playing career in the FA Women’s Championship.
Ashworth-Clifford spent her youth with Wigan Athletic before moving into Manchester United’s academy system after being spotted by the club’s scouts. She then joined Manchester City following a successful trial spell before spending more than three years in the United States.
Lewes boss Parker could hand a debut to Ashworth-Clifford when his side welcome Sheffield United to The Dripping Pan tomorrow afternoon. The Rookettes will be hoping to follow up their excellent 1-1 draw with promotion-chasing Durham last time out with another good performance against a Sheffield United outfit which returned to winning ways last weekend.
