United States winger Megan Rapinoe says that national team colleague Sam Mewis’ move to Manchester City was a great career decision.
Mewis moved to The Academy Stadium back in August and the 28-year-old has arguably been one of the best additions in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League so this season.
The player has brought a lot of additional quality to the City midfield, showing strength both in the air and on the ground, a keen eye for a pass and her natural goalscoring touch. Mewis has made 17 appearances for City in all competitions so far this season, scoring six goals.
With Mewis having played some of the most club minutes of any player in the United States national team over the course of the last six months, the player has brought her good club form to the international stage with The Stars and Stripes at this month’s camp. She netted a first career hat-trick in the United States’ 4-0 victory over Colombia on Tuesday while she created one goal and won her side a penalty kick for another as her country defeated the same opponents 6-0 in the early hours of this morning.
When speaking about Mewis’ form for the national team to FA Women’s Super League Full-Time, teammate Rapinoe hailed her decision to move overseas to join Manchester City.
“I think going overseas was great for her to continue to get games” said Rapinoe. “I think that she is really finding her game and coming into her prime.
“She just looks comfortable, she’s dominant all of the time. She is just a different player than any other player in the world with not only her size but the way in which she uses it.
“Her dribbling ability just dominating through the midfield, her technical ability, she is a good passer, she’s good in defence, she’s good in the air, she’s got a great shot and she kind of has this complete box-to-box midfield game.
“She is just playing unbelievable at the moment and I honestly believe that there is so much more room for her to grow.”
Mewis was recently crowned the 2020 US Soccer Female Player of the Year and Rapinoe went on to agree that she is currently the best player in the United States squad.
She added “During the game, I actually had a momentary wander of the mind thinking about how Sam has emerged as one of the top three or four players in our team right now.
“Actually, I think she’s probably the best player in our team right now, that’s pretty easy to say.”
Mewis won her 70th senior cap for the United States when she took to the field against Colombia in the early hours of this morning. Sadly, the occasion ended abruptly for the player with Mewis sustaining an ankle injury. It is hoped that the injury is not serious with the player set to be assessed by the United States medical staff.
