Everton striker Valerie Gauvin has returned to the French squad for the Tournoi de France later this month.
The 24-year-old goal machine missed Les Bleues final two UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 qualifying fixtures against Austria and Kazakhstan towards the end of last year after sustaining a muscle injury whilst playing in the 2019/2020 Vitality Women’s FA Cup final for her club, a game that Everton lost 3-1 after extra-time.
French boss Corinne Diacre has today named her 27-player squad for this month’s Tournoi de France with Gauvin making the cut. The Everton forward is the only Barclays FA Women’s Super League player to feature in the squad. There was no space for her club teammate Maeva Clemaron or for West Ham United’s Kenza Dali.
Gauvin ended 2020 as a world record holder after netting the fastest international goal in history. She found the back of the net after just 10 seconds in France’s 11-0 home victory over Kazakhstan, beating Everton teammate Simone Magill’s previous record of 11 seconds for Northern Ireland. The striker netted three goals in five international appearances for France throughout 2020.
France begin their Tournoi de France fixtures against Iceland in Sedan on Wednesday 17 February before taking on Switzerland in Metz in their second fixture three days later.
