Aston Villa forward Diana Silva has been called-up by Portugal for their UEFA Women’s EURO play-off against Russia next month.
The 25-year-old played in seven of Portugal’s eight group matches as Francisco Neto’s side finished as runners-up to Finland. She scored her only goal in qualifying in Portugal’s 3-0 victory over Cyprus back in October.
Portugal must now face Russia over two legs next month to determine whether they will qualify for their second UEFA Women’s EURO tournament finals.
Head coach Neto named his squad yesterday with Aston Villa forward Silva being included in the 25-player group. The player is in-line to collect her 65th senior international cap for Portugal. She has so far netted 14 goals for her country in 64 outings since making her senior debut in 2011. Silva is one of just four players in the Portuguese squad who is currently playing her football overseas.
There are just three places left to fill for next summer’s UEFA Women’s EURO tournament finals in England. Portugal will host Russia in the first leg of their play-off tie at the Estadio do Restelo in Lisbon on Friday 9 April. They will then travel to the Sapsan Arena in Moscow for the second leg on Tuesday 13 April.
