‘The derby is growing’ – Arsenal head coach comments ahead of North London derby at Spurs

Arsenal head coach Joe Montemurro says that the Barclays FA Women’s Super League’s North London derby is growing in it’s profile ahead of the latest edition at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium tomorrow afternoon.

The Gunners will face Spurs for just the third time in a top flight fixture with Montemurro’s side having won the previous two league meetings.

Speaking in Arsenal’s pre-match press conference, Montemurro said that the profile of the women’s North London derby is growing and he is looking forward to another big occasion against Spurs this weekend.

“To be back there again (at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium) and to be able to do it again in the circumstances is really positive for the game,” said Montemurro. “We are looking forward to keeping this rhythm going, it has been great to continue this run of games.

“We are looking forward to a really important day. The ‘derby’ is growing and I think tomorrow will again be an important game and we will be playing against a good team.”

Spurs go into the match winless in six Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixtures but Montemurro is expecting a tough game and was complimentary about how the club have adapted to life as a top flight outfit.

“All credit to Tottenham, they’ve done very well with their recruiting and they have done very well for a team which has only been in the WSL for a couple of years,” said Montemurro. “They are really growing as a force.

“I have seen a safe, secure and steady growth (from Spurs) and I think that they are on a good course over the next three or four years to become a stable and competitive team in the WSL.

“I think they are now. I think that they have got a very good team and I honestly believe that on their day, they can really unlock any team.

“They seem to be making the right moves and the right noise seems to be coming out of them in terms of building sustainable foundations for the future.”

The North London derby between Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal is scheduled to kick-off at 3.30pm tomorrow afternoon and will be available for fans to stream live on the FA Player.
