Individual mistakes cost England on a night of fine lines for the Lionesses

England have suffered their second defeat in just four days with Hege Riise’s side having fallen to a 2-0 home defeat to Canada at the bet365 Stadium in Stoke this evening.

Two defensive mistakes cost the Lionesses dearly in The Potteries as a lack of composure from Demi Stokes contributed to the opening goal before an uncharacteristic error from veteran goalkeeper Karen Bardsley in the second half handed Canada a second.

Canada were ahead as soon as the second minute when Stokes blundered and Evelyn Viens edged in to score.

England responded with Georgia Stanway registering a couple of goal attempts before Jordan Nobbs saw a long range effort tipped onto the bar by Stephanie Labbe.

Carly Telford then pushed a Quinn effort from range to safety before Beth England failed to hit the target at the other end after some neat link-up play with Lauren Hemp.

The second half was starved of chances. Good defending at either end by defenders Leah Williamson and Vanessa Gilles prevented the goalkeepers from being tested as the game remained competitive but lacked attacking quality.

There was to be a second goal and like the first, it came in comical circumstances. Millie Bright played a hospital pass to Bardsley and she was caught out by Nichelle Prince who charged down her clearance to bundle the ball in the net.

Two defeats, five poor goals conceded and just a penalty scored, this has been a gruesome few days for the England team who have returned to their old ways last seen towards the end of former boss Phil Neville’s tenure.
