West Ham United midfielder Katerina Svitkova was again on target for the Czech Republic this evening but she was unable to prevent her side from losing their UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 play-off tie against Switzerland on penalty kicks.
Svitkova netted a penalty kick in the first leg on Friday as the two sides played out a 1-1 draw in Chomutov and she again scored for her side in the second leg this evening, although her game would end on a sour note in the penalty shootout.
Following a goalless first half in Thun, the Czech Republic knew that Switzerland held an advantage on away goals therefore they had to score in the second 45 minutes. They did just that six minutes after the break through West Ham United’s Svitkova.
The pressure shifted onto Switzerland but they responded well and eight minutes later, Lia Walti teed up Coumba Sow to level the scores both on the night and on aggregate.
The tie ended 1-1 after 90 minutes and 2-2 on aggregate meaning that the two sides were forced to play another 30 minutes of extra-time. No further goals were produced and UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 qualification was to be decided on a penalty shootout.
Svitkova missed her side’s final penalty in the shootout as they lost 3-2. The Czech Republic’s quest to reach a major tournament finals goes on.
