Chelsea manager Emma Hayes says that full-back Jorja Fox will go on to have a great career in the game after the player starred in The Blues’ 5-0 Vitality Women’s FA Cup fourth round victory over London City Lionesses at Kingsmeadow last night.
The 17-year-old made her first start in a senior Chelsea shirt, playing alongside fellow academy graduates Aggie Beever-Jones and Charlotte Wardlaw. Fox played the full 90 minutes for The Blues and her performance came in for much praise from both her manager and the club’s fans.
Commenting on Fox after the match, Hayes said that the player will go on to achieve big things in the game.
“Jorja has been with us all year and so it is no surprise to me,” said Hayes when discussing her performance. “She can play any position on the outside, left or right-back.
“She is composed, she’s got great vision, she’s a great decision maker, a good athlete, she’s got a good pedigree.
“She is going to have a great career.”
Fox was the only one of the three young players to complete 90 minutes with Beever-Jones and Wardlaw having been replaced at the break by Beth England and Jessie Fleming. Hayes went on to say that it was important to give two of her senior players minutes ahead of what promises to be a season-defining fixture at Manchester City on Wednesday.
“I have to prepare the team for what is going to be a big week,” said Hayes. “It is important that we get it right for every single player, especially the senior players first.
“It was important for Beth and for Jessie that they got some minutes and for the young players, we wanted to give them a taste of it but they do have to be patient and wait for their opportunity to get another moment like that but they were both excellent.”
Chelsea’s Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixture against Manchester City at The Academy Stadium kicks-off at 6pm on Wednesday evening.
