Arsenal goalkeeper Zinsberger features in Austria’s defeat to Italy

Arsenal goalkeeper Manuela Zinsberger played the full 90 minutes as Austria were defeated 3-2 by Italy in an international friendly in Wiener Neustadt this afternoon.

The 25-year-old stopper collected her 68th senior cap for Austria as they fell to a narrow defeat at the Wiener Neustadt Arena.

Full-back Angelica Soffia opened the scoring for the visitors after just three minutes but Nicola Billa levelled matters just nine minutes later.

Italy regained the lead early in the second half with defender Soffia again the unlikely goalscorer before Austria netted a second equaliser through centre-back Carina Wenninger.

Irene Fuhrmann’s side will have hoped to take the momentum forward and score the winning goal but they conceded for a third time 14 minutes from time. Italy were awarded a penalty kick and Elena Linari converted in a game which saw four out of the five goals scored by defensive players.

Austria have now won just one of their last four matches which came against Slovakia in February. Head coach Fuhrmann will be concerned with the defensive side of Austria’s game with the team conceding goals at an alarming rate. The Austrian goal has been breached on 11 occasions in their last four games, a record that must be improved as the nation head towards UEFA Euro 2022.
