Tottenham Hotspur’s assistant head coach Lauren Smith has been named Bristol City’s new interim head coach according to reports on The Robins’ official website.
The 33-year-old will take charge of Bristol City for the 2021/2022 season with manager Tanya Oxtoby set to take another year out of the game after recently giving birth.
Smith returns to Bristol City after spending seven years with the club between 2010 and 2017. She worked as a first team assistant coach and as a technical director in her first spell in the South West.
There is a significant challenge awaiting Smith at Twerton Park in the upcoming season. Bristol City were relegated from the top flight in 2020/2021 and they must now look to gain an immediate promotion back to the Barclays FA Women’s Super League from a division which is seeing more and more clubs invest heavily in their squads.
Smith takes control of the club after previous interim boss Matt Beard moved on following the conclusion of the season. The Robins went close to escaping relegation under Beard’s guidance but their second tier status was confirmed with a 3-1 defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion on the final day of the season.
Smith was the outstanding candidate in Bristol City’s application process and she will now get the opportunity to lead the club’s push for promotion.
