Manchester City full-back Campbell joins Liverpool

Departing Manchester City full-back Megan Campbell has agreed a move to FA Women’s Championship club Liverpool according to reports on The Reds’ official website.

The 27-year-old Republic of Ireland international’s Manchester City departure was confirmed last month with the player being out of contract at The Academy Stadium this summer.

Rumours had surfaced a couple of weeks ago that the left-back would be joining Liverpool and that move has today been confirmed by the Merseyside club.

Campbell spent more than five years as a Manchester City player but she saw her career severely hit with a catalogue of injury problems. The player made Gareth Taylor’s matchday squad on just one occasion in her final year with The Cityzens as a result of her rotten luck in the treatment room. With Campbell now having secured a move to Liverpool, she will be hoping for a fresh start at Prenton Park.

After signing for The Reds, Campbell said “I’ve played and trained with a lot of successful players from different cultures, Olympic medal winners, World Cup winners, European winners, so I’ve been around it and seen what it takes to get to the top and stay at the top.

“I hope I can help the club get promoted and get back to where it belongs.

“Matt has been great for me and when he contacted me and said he wanted to bring me here, that was brilliant for me – hearing a manager wanted me so badly.

“So when I got the opportunity, I was never going to turn it down. I’m really looking forward to this challenge. The manager has put his trust and faith in me.

“I know the girls, from seeing a few interviews and stuff, were quite disappointed not getting promoted last year, and I know they will have fire in their bellies and are ready to push on now.”

Campbell joins forward Leanne Kiernan and winger Yana Daniels in joining Liverpool this week.
