Arsenal forward Vivianne Miedema was in red hot goalscoring form as The Netherlands opened their Tokyo 2020 campaign with a 10-3 victory over Zambia earlier today.
Miedema netted four goals for Sarina Wiegman’s side as The Netherlands put down an early marker in their quest for Olympic gold.
The Arsenal forward opened the scoring after just nine minutes for the Dutch before Lieke Martens soon added a second. Miedema was then teed up by her former Arsenal teammate Danielle van de Donk as she claimed her second and The Netherlands’ third goal of the game.
Babra Banda then reduced Zambia’s three-goal deficit as she netted the nation’s first-ever Olympic goal before further goals from Miedema, Martens and Shanice van de Sanden handed The Netherlands a 6-1 lead at the break.
Miedema completed her scoring 14 minutes into the second half as she made it 7-1. The goal was the forward’s fourth and her third combination with Van de Donk. Jill Roord, Leneth Beerensteyn and Victoria Pevola added further goals as The Netherlands went 10-1 up.
Head coach Wiegman’s biggest disappointment will have been what came late in the game. Zambia netted two goals in the last 10 minutes through Babra who completed her hat-trick.
The Netherlands return to action on Saturday when they face Brazil in their second group match.
