White on target again as Team GB record single goal victory over Japan

Manchester City forward Ellen White netted the only goal as Team GB defeated Japan 1-0 in their second group game at the Olympic Games this lunchtime.

White beat a couple of opposition players to a Lucy Bronze cross late in the second half as she headed in her third goal of the tournament. Victory helped Team GB to secure their place in the quarter-finals with a game to spare.

The first half saw both sides put up a real fight but there was a lack of goalscoring opportunities at both ends. Japan looked the most likely side to break the deadlock. Honoka Hayashi tested Team GB goalkeeper Ellie Roebuck from distance before Mina Tanaka fired an effort just wide.

The second half was equally as starved of quality in the final third. Steph Houghton volleyed an effort high and wide after Japan failed to clear the ball from a corner kick before Nikita Parris and Keira Walsh went close.

The game looked destined to end goalless until White beat everyone to a Bronze cross and headed in both her’s and her side’s third goal of the tournament.

The victory means that Team GB have secured their place in the quarter-finals of the Olympic Games’ Women’s Football Tournament with a game to go. Hege Riise’s side complete their group fixtures against Canada on Tuesday lunchtime.
