Former Birmingham City midfielder Emma Kelly has joined FA Women’s Championship club Sunderland according to reports on The Lady Black Cats’ official website.
The 24-year-old moves to Wearside following the expiry of her contract with Birmingham City. Kelly returns to Sunderland for her second spell at the club.
In her first spell with The Lady Black Cats, Kelly helped the club to promotion to the FA Women’s Super League 1 in 2014 while the player represented the club on 15 occasions in the top flight.
After securing the services of the midfielder, Sunderland boss Melanie Reay said “I am absolutely delighted to bring Emma back to the club. She will bring a lot of experience to this young squad and will play an important role throughout the season. She has some fantastic attributes and I’m sure fans will be excited to see her back in red and white.”
After leaving Sunderland at the end of her first spell, Kelly briefly spent time in Iceland with IBV. The player joined latest club Birmingham City in 2019.
Kelly becomes Sunderland boss Reay’s second signing of the summer. She joins fellow midfielder Charlotte Potts in returning to Wearside ahead of the club’s return to the second tier.
