Bristol City bolster attack with FAWC goal machine Johnson

Bristol City interim head coach Lauren Smith has completed her most impressive addition to date with the signing of proven FA Women’s Championship goalscorer Melissa Johnson according to reports on the club’s official website.

The forward joins The Robins on a free transfer after leaving former club Sheffield United at the end of last season.

Johnson has terrified opposition defences on a regular basis in her time playing in the second tier. The player has netted 34 goals in just 63 FA Women’s Championship games during spells with Sheffield FC, Leicester City, Aston Villa and Sheffield United.

After completing her move to Bristol City, Johnson said “I’m delighted to be joining Bristol City as we build towards the start of the new Championship season.

“We’re not far away now from the start of the season so I’m aiming to hit the ground running for the last few weeks of pre-season and that’ll hopefully lead to a strong start.

“I’ve spoken a lot with Lauren (Smith) about her plans for the team this season and where I fit in to those, and I’m looking forward to working with her. I’m going to push myself in training so I can put in the performances I know I’m capable of. I want to contribute to a successful season for the club.”

Bristol City are aiming to win promotion back to the Barclays FA Women’s Super League at the first attempt this season. In Johnson, the club have signed a player who was a promotion winner herself just two seasons’ ago.

The Robins kick-off the new season at Crystal Palace on Sunday 29 August.
