Former Manchester City loanee Carli Lloyd has announced that she will be retiring from playing later this year.
The news was revealed in an official press release issued by US Soccer earlier this afternoon.
The 39-year-old forward has enjoyed a 22-year senior career which has seen her become the second most-capped player in international footballing history with 312 caps while she has scored 128 goals for her country. Lloyd has helped the United States to two Olympic Gold Medals and two FIFA Women’s World Cups during her time with the national team.
The player’s numerous personal accolades include being named the FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year in 2015 and winning the Golden Ball at the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015.
In the club game, Lloyd has spent virtually all of her career playing in her homeland, representing the likes of the Chicago Red Stars, Western New York Flash, Houston Dash and current club NJ/NY Gotham FC. In 2017, the forward also enjoyed a short loan spell at English club Manchester City. During her time at The Academy Stadium, Lloyd made four appearances in the 2017 FA Women’s Super League 1 Spring Series while she scored in Manchester City’s 4-1 victory over Birmingham City at Wembley as they lifted the Women’s FA Cup for the first time.
Lloyd will officially retire at the end of the current National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) season.
