Everton finally confirm signing of highly-rated Icelandic keeper Rúnarsdóttir

Everton have finally confirmed the capture of Icelandic international goalkeeper Cecilía Rán Rúnarsdóttir on a three-year deal.

The 18-year-old was first linked with a move to the Barclays FA Women’s Super League club in January while a deal was rumoured to have been agreed in principle back in March.

Rúnarsdóttir was first linked with Everton when she was at former club Fylkir. She joined Swedish club KIF Örebro DFF on a short term deal in March to provide cover for injured goalkeeper Moa Öhman but it always seemed like the intention was for her to move to Everton this summer.

The Blue Girls have today confirmed the capture of Rúnarsdóttir via their official website. Everton have revealed that the player will be loaned back to KIF Örebro DFF for the remainder of the calendar year.

After her move to Walton Hall Park was finally confirmed, Rúnarsdóttir said “It’s amazing to sign for Everton. Everton is a big club and you can see with the players they are signing that they are building big. I’m just so thankful I’m going to be a part of it.

“Obviously, I’m very young but I have a lot of experience playing senior football which helps. I feel like I’ve gained a lot of maturity in the game.

“I think Everton are on a journey to become one of the best clubs in Europe. They have the squad and the environment to do that.”

Rúnarsdóttir becomes Everton’s eighth signing of the summer transfer window. Courtney Brosnan will provide the main competition to Sandy MacIver for the club’s number one jersey while the Icelandic keeper temporarily furthers her development in Sweden.
