Vivianne Miedema netted a hat-trick as Arsenal cruised into the UEFA Women’s Champions League group stage with a 4-0 Round 2 second leg victory over Slavia Prague at the Sinobo Stadium this evening.
The Gunners were already leading 3-0 from the first leg and Miedema’s hat-trick, combined with a Kim Little penalty, handed Jonas Eidevall’s side a sizeable second leg win.
Arsenal had the chances in the first half but they were unable to find a way beyond home keeper Olivie Lukášová. Lotte Wubben-Moy and Anna Patten both tested the Slavia Prague keeper early on before Miedema registered an effort on goal towards the end of what turned out to be a goalless first period.
The Gunners finally broke the deadlock in the 61st minute when Beth Mead’s perfect cross found the boot of Miedema just a few yards out and she clinically fired the ball home. The Dutch international quickly followed that goal up with another after being played in by Patten as Arsenal established a two-goal lead on the night.
Miedema needed one more goal for her 100th in an Arsenal shirt and she got it after causing panic in the box, freeing herself from opposition defenders to shoot into a loosely-guarded net.
Katie McCabe then saw an effort strike the woodwork before captain Little rounded-off a 7-0 aggregate success from the penalty spot with 14 minutes remaining.
Arsenal have added their name to the draw for the UEFA Women’s Champions League group stage which takes place on Monday.
