Leicester City must become more mentally resilient says Morgan after cup exit

Leicester City manager Jonathan Morgan said that his side are lacking mental resilience following their 6-0 defeat at Manchester City.

It has been a tough start to life in the top flight for The Foxes with three defeats on the spin and the club added a Vitality Women’s FA Cup defeat to that sequence last night as they went down 6-0 to Manchester City in their quarter-final tie.

Speaking to FAWSL Full-Time after his side’s latest defeat, Morgan admitted that it has been a tough start and he is hoping to see his side develop more mental resilience in the coming weeks after conceding 10 goals in their last two games.

“I was saying to the staff earlier that we are there to develop these girls mentally as well as footballers,” Morgan said. “I think at the minute, we are lacking in the mentality department in terms of resilience, we concede one goal and then we concede another and today again, three goals in seven minutes after we had such a fantastic first half.

“It is something that we have to work on but we will work, we will get better, we are definitely learning. We still have a positive atmosphere around the club and the team but we are under no illusions that we have to start showing more on the pitch to bring out the points at this level.”

Leicester City were always going to face some real challenges following their promotion from the FA Women’s Championship and Morgan went on to admit that the competition has been very much what his side were expecting.

He said “It was definitely what we expected, we were under no illusions that there would be a step up. You naturally look at the teams who have been promoted before you like Villa and you see that it took them a while to transition as well.

“We felt like we missed a trick by failing to pick up some early points. We have a tough run of games coming up but I think each week, we will get stronger.

“We’ve got eight girls out with injuries or knocks at the minute, four are long term. Once we get those players back training regularly, that will have a big impact on how we play and the quality will come.

“It is about learning about this level and just focusing on how we can get better each week and one of the things that we have to appreciate is that the quality is just so high at this level and it is just ruthless.”

Leicester City are back in action on Sunday when Tottenham Hotspur are the visitors to The King Power Stadium in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League.
