Chelsea v Brighton & Hove Albion – Stat Attack

Chelsea will be looking to gain revenge on Brighton & Hove Albion for last season’s 2-1 defeat at Kingsmeadow when the pair meet at the same venue this lunchtime.

Sam Kerr’s early goal gave Chelsea the perfect start in the last meeting between the two sides in February but Albion came back to stun the hosts thanks to goals from Aileen Whelan and Megan Connolly.

Ahead of the match, FAWSL Full-Time have been looking at the statistics surrounding the fixture provided to us by Opta. Here are four facts which relate to Chelsea’s meeting with Brighton & Hove Albion.

Brighton’s victory ended Chelsea’s 33-match unbeaten run

Prior to that unexpected 2-1 defeat at Kingsmeadow, Chelsea were unbeaten in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League in 33 games. Hope Powell’s Albion side arrived at Jack Goodchild Way in poor form and having been hammered 3-0 by relegation-threatened Bristol City one week prior. The Seagulls made a mockery of the formbook, leaving the hosts stunned.

Brighton’s overall record against WSL champions is not so good

Before last season’s 2-1 win at Chelsea, Brighton & Hove Albion had lost each of their other five top flight games against the reigning Barclays FA Women’s Super League champions without scoring a goal (15 conceded). Those defeats are made up of three losses against Chelsea and two against Arsenal.

Chelsea may find their latest opponents a tough nut to crack

No side has conceded fewer goals in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League this season than Brighton & Hove Albion (1), while The Seagulls also faced the fewest shots on target (8) and the lowest xG against (2.4). In contrast, it should be noted that Chelsea have now scored in each of their last 54 Barclays FA Women’s Super League matches, a competition record, averaging 3.2 goals per game. Can the visitors frustrate Chelsea’s so often deadly attack? They’ve done it before.

Chelsea have bounced back from Brighton defeat in style

Since that well-documented home defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion, Chelsea have won five consecutive Barclays FA Women’s Super League matches on home soil without conceding a single goal. The Blues have netted 20 goals themselves during that winning streak.

The Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixture between Chelsea and Brighton & Hove Albion kicks-off at 11.30am and will be broadcast live on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Premier League.
