‘A position we don’t want to be in’ – Blackburn Rovers looking to climb the table says Donnelly

Blackburn Rovers manager Gemma Donnelly says that her side are looking to climb the FA Women’s Championship table in the New Year following a difficult first half of the season.

Rovers have enjoyed some bright points in the first four months of the new campaign but inconsistent form has left them in 10th position in the table.

When recently speaking with FAWSL Full-Time, Donnelly said that her side must aim to climb up the FA Women’s Championship table into a more comfortable position in 2022.

“It’s a position that we don’t want to be in,” Donnelly said when commenting on her side’s league position. “Other than Bristol who were clearly winners on the day, I think we have competed really well with every team in the league, we’ve taken a point from Liverpool as well.

“On our day, we can compete with everybody but we don’t want to be caught in the horribleness at the bottom of the table. If we can’t convert performances into results and points it doesn’t mean anything so we will concentrate and work hard ahead of a really difficult January run.”

With Rovers having taken that point against Liverpool and having run the likes of London City Lionesses and Crystal Palace close, the squad clearly have the ability to push hard to get results. Donnelly went on to say that upcoming games against Liverpool and Bristol City may suit her side’s style of play.

She said “With us, we like to play footballing teams and we like to get the ball on the floor and we like to play. The ball in the air and competing for first and second balls just isn’t our game, despite having probably having the tallest team, it is just not our game to get into big battles.

“When you play the likes of Liverpool who want to play and Bristol, we come into our own because that’s when we can compete against them.

“Against the teams who want to get the ball down and play football, they are more of a match for us than when we go into a physical contest like the one against Durham in our last game.”

Blackburn Rovers’ opening fixture of 2022 against Liverpool takes place at The Sir Tom Finney Stadium on Sunday 9 January.
