Sunderland forward Iris Achterhof has left the club by mutual consent.
The 24-year-old Dutch attacker has spent a little over three months on Wearside in which she has made four appearances in all competitions for The Lady Black Cats.
Sunderland have today confirmed Achterhof’s departure via a post on their official club website. It is unknown whether the player will look to continue her footballing career with another club in England or move overseas.
Achterhof spent the early days of her career in her native Netherlands with Heerenveen before spending a short period in the Icelandic top flight with Thór / KA. In 2019, the forward moved to England and joined FA Women’s Championship club Durham. Achterhof enjoyed a successful first season in the North East before suffering an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury which significantly disrupted her progress.
After regaining her fitness, Achterhof briefly represented Durham in the early stages of this season before coming to a mutual agreement to leave the club in September. The player swiftly moved to Sunderland but she is now set for a further change following her Wearside exit.
With Sunderland being the FA Women’s Championship’s lowest goalscorers this season, manager Melanie Reay could now enter the transfer market in a bid to recruit another attacking player.
