Chelsea have completed a first-ever league double over Manchester City with a 1-0 victory at Kingsmeadow this afternoon.
Guro Reiten netted the only goal of the game early in the first half as Chelsea closed the gap on Barclays FA Women’s Super League leaders Arsenal to just two points.
Chelsea started brightly at Kingsmeadow and they went close inside the opening 10 minutes when Erin Cuthbert’s corner kick was taken by the wind and Jess Park had to make a goal-line clearance.
The Blues took the lead from their next major attack. Jess Carter delivered the ball in from the right and Reiten got her head on the cross to put her side ahead.
Chelsea continued to threaten with Pernille Harder forcing a good block from visiting keeper Ellie Roebuck before Park brought an excellent stop out of Ann-Katrin Berger at the other end.
Emma Hayes’ side had an excellent chance to extend their lead early in the second half when Harder released Sam Kerr but the Australian international was unable to guide the ball beyond Roebuck.
From that moment on, it was Manchester City who looked the most likely team to score. The Cityzens tested Berger on a couple of occasions from distance before Lauren Hemp looped an effort over the bar.
Chelsea substitute Lauren James then tested Roebuck in a rare foray forward from the hosts before Millie Bright bravely diverted Hemp’s effort wide at the other end.
Manchester City continued to push forward in search of an equaliser but Chelsea somehow held out as they took advantage of league leaders Arsenal’s slip up yesterday to close the gap at the top of the Barclays FA Women’s Super League table.
