England debut a dream come true and more for Aston Villa’s Hampton

Aston Villa goalkeeper Hannah Hampton has admitted that she was thrilled to make her England debut against Spain this afternoon.

The 21-year-old marked her long-awaited maiden appearance for the England senior team with a clean sheet as the Lionesses drew 0-0 with Spain in their latest Arnold Clark Cup fixture at Carrow Road in Norwich.

When speaking to FAWSL Full-Time in the post-match press conference, Hampton said that her senior international debut was better than she could have ever imagined.

“I couldn’t really have planned it any better,” Hampton said. “You go over this day so many times in your head and what you wish for and honestly, the game was more than what I ever thought it could be.

“The wait was definitely worth it and hopefully, there are many more to come but I’m not pushing for anything, I’m just going to see where it takes me and how often I get a chance, if I get a chance again. I’ve tried my best and that’s all that I can do.”

Hampton’s performance against Spain may have helped boost her chances of making the squad for this summer’s UEFA Women’s EURO but that is not something that the keeper is focusing on at this stage.

She said “I’ve just gone out today and played my own game. At the end of the day, it’s down to Sarina (Wiegman) and the coaches for what team they pick and all I can do is put myself in the shop window.

“I aim to keep performing well at club and country and that’s all I am focusing on.”

Hampton’s first England cap comes two years after she was called into the travelling party for the 2020 SheBelieves Cup. She was named as a training player for that tournament.
