‘We stuck to the plan’ – England boss Wiegman pleased with application against Spain

England head coach Sarina Wiegman said that she was very pleased to see her side execute their game plan against Spain at Carrow Road this afternoon.

The Lionesses took on Jorge Vilda’s ever-improving Spain side in their second match at the inaugural Arnold Clark Cup. The two nations battled to a goalless draw in Norwich as they added another point to their respective competition tallies.

When speaking in the post-match press conference, England head coach Wiegman said that the most pleasing aspect of her side’s performance was the fact that they followed the game plan.

“What I liked most today was that we had a plan of how we wanted to play against Spain and we did that as a team,” Wiegman said. “We substituted a lot and changed the team from Thursday and that is what pleased me a lot, that we really stuck to the plan.

“I hoped that we were going to reward ourselves with goals because we created chances, it would’ve been nice too.”

Spain will go into this summer’s UEFA Women’s EURO as one of the tournament favourites. Despite England’s draw with the Spaniards, Wiegman is not getting carried away, although she is pleased with the level of opposition which the Lionesses are facing at the Arnold Clark Cup.

She said “We all know that we are not going to win the EUROs today or on Wednesday but it is good that we play a team like Spain because they have developed so much over the years. I am also very happy that we will play Germany and that we have already played Canada.

“We need these games to develop and to be exploited at the highest level and that’s what we did today. It was very good to see how we were as a team and we disturbed their style of play. I am happy with our performance.”

England’s final Arnold Clark Cup match against Germany takes place at Molineux in Wolverhampton on Wednesday.
