The Vitality Women’s FA Cup returns this weekend with Chelsea facing Barclays FA Women’s Super League rivals Leicester City at Kingsmeadow in the fifth round.
The Blues overcame Aston Villa in the fourth round while Leicester City caused one of the upsets by defeating high-flying Tottenham Hotspur at The Hive.
Ahead of the two clubs’ meeting on Saturday, FAWSL Full-Time have taken a look at the statistics and here are four facts which relate to Chelsea’s Vitality Women’s FA Cup fifth round tie against Leicester City.
Both sides recorded 3-1 victories in the fourth round
Chelsea and Leicester City won their respective fourth round ties by 3-1 scorelines. Emma Hayes’ Blues eased their way beyond Aston Villa with a 3-1 win at The Banks’s Stadium while Leicester City needed extra-time to defeat Tottenham Hotspur by the same scoreline following a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes.
Both clubs are no strangers to the quarter-finals
Both Chelsea and Leicester City have reached the quarter-finals of the Vitality Women’s FA Cup in each of the last two seasons. The Blues are the current trophy holders while Leicester City are yet to negotiate their way beyond the quarter-final stage. You have to go back as far as the 2012/2013 season for the last time that Chelsea didn’t reach the quarter-finals and they will be confident of advancing to that stage again this weekend.
Purfield important in helping Leicester City contain Chelsea
When the two sides met at Kingsmeadow in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League back in October, one notable performer for Leicester City was full-back Jemma Purfield. The 25-year-old attempted more tackles in that match than any other Leicester City player while she came out on top in terms of tackles and interceptions. Purfield could be a key player for her side again this weekend.
Harder Chelsea’s domestic cup goddessÂ
Chelsea forward Pernille Harder has netted in each of her side’s three domestic cup matches so far this season. The Dane netted a treble in the 4-2 FA Women’s Continental League Cup quarter-final victory at West Ham United while she scored once against Manchester United in the next round. Harder was also on target as Chelsea won 3-1 at Aston Villa in the Vitality Women’s FA Cup fourth round.
