Manchester City defender Steph Houghton’s injury troubles look set to continue for some time yet with the player having undergone surgery on an Achilles injury.
The club released a brief update on their captain’s fitness earlier today. It is understood that Houghton has received her treatment and she is now in rehabilitation.
Today’s news will be of some concern to England with the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 now being just four months away. Houghton is yet to appear for the Lionesses under new head coach Sarina Wiegman with the player having been injured in her very first camp. The defender did return to fitness earlier this year but she has suffered a setback after picking up her latest injury.
Houghton’s UEFA Women’s EURO dream is not over just yet. Manchester City have indicated that the player will return to training ‘in the near future’, a sign that Houghton will have an opportunity to prove her fitness to national team boss Wiegman well before the tournament begins.
Injuries have restricted Houghton to just five Barclays FA Women’s Super League appearances for Manchester City this season. The player last featured for The Cityzens in their 1-1 draw with Arsenal at The Academy Stadium in January.
