Arsenal march on at the top with victory at Brighton

Arsenal maintained their five-point advantage at the top of the Barclays FA Women’s Super League table with a 3-0 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion at The People’s Pension Stadium last night.

Stina Blackstenius scored twice for The Gunners while Beth Mead was also on target as Jonas Eidevall’s side took another small step towards being champions.

Arsenal went close early on in Crawley when Mead’s dink into the box was headed on by Lotte Wubben-Moy but Brighton & Hove Albion keeper Megan Walsh was able to tip the ball over the bar. Vivianne Miedema then forced another good save from Walsh with a header from a corner kick before the Dutch international tested the Brighton & Hove Albion keeper again from close range.

Walsh was eventually beaten just before the half-hour mark when Caitlin Foord played the ball across the box for Blackstenius to sweep home from six yards.

Some sloppy play by the hosts in the middle of the park then gifted the ball to Miedema who threaded in Mead to make it 2-0 with a simple finish into the bottom corner of the Brighton & Hove Albion net.

The Gunners went into the break with a three-goal advantage. Foord’s cross from the left deflected into the path of Blackstenius who directed her header across goal and into the far corner of Walsh’s goal.

Arsenal had chances to add to their lead in the second half but Walsh stood tall to deny Miedema before the Brighton & Hove Albion keeper got down to push Katie McCabe’s shot away. The ball then fell to Nikita Parris but she somehow managed to balloon her effort wide as the game ended 3-0.

Eidevall’s side remain five points clear at the league summit with five games remaining. Second-placed Chelsea do have two games in-hand on The Gunners.
