Arsenal forward Foord set for 100th senior cap for Australia

Arsenal forward Caitlin Foord is set to earn her 100th senior cap for Australia during next month’s international window.

Australia head coach Tony Gustavsson announced his latest squad selection this morning with Foord being included in his 23-player group. The Commonwealth Bank Matildas will face New Zealand in Queensland on Friday 8 April before taking on the same opponents in Canberra on Tuesday 12 April.

Arsenal forward Foord will arrive in camp next week sitting on 99 caps for her country meaning that if she plays in either of Australia’s upcoming games, she will become their latest centurion. The attacker made her debut for the Commonwealth Bank Matildas against New Zealand back in May 2011, scoring in a 3-0 win. She was named the FIFA Women’s World Cup’s Best Young Player in 2011 as her country reached the quarter-finals. Foord has been a key member of the Australian team at the last three FIFA Women’s World Cups.

There have been a number of Australia’s Barclays FA Women’s Super League stars who have reached the 100-cap mark in recent months. Tottenham Hotspur’s Kyah Simon (109), Chelsea’s Sam Kerr (108), Manchester City’s Alanna Kennedy (105), West Ham United’s Tameka Yallop (103) and Foord’s Arsenal teammate Steph Catley (100) have all become centurions for their country. Arsenal’s Lydia Williams is currently on 97 caps and she could move closer to the milestone next month.

Australia’s Barclays FA Women’s Super League stars will fly out for international duty following this weekend’s matches.
