Chelsea’s England earns Lionesses recall in place of club teammate Kirby

The Football Association have this afternoon announced England head coach Sarina Wiegman’s 24-player squad for next month’s FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023 qualifiers against North Macedonia and Northern Ireland.

The Lionesses travel to Skopje to take on North Macedonia on Friday 8 April before facing Northern Ireland in-front of a big crowd at Windsor Park on Tuesday 12 April.

As expected, England boss Wiegman has again kept faith with the players who have served her so well in her eight months in charge. Fran Kirby misses out through illness while Steph Houghton continues to be sidelined with injury. Chelsea’s Beth England has received a recall in place of club teammate Kirby.

England could secure their place at the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023 with back-to-back victories next month if Austria fail to win both of their matches against Northern Ireland and Latvia. England are currently five points clear at the top of their group with four matches left to play. The Lionesses have won all six qualifying matches so far, scoring 53 goals while they are yet to concede.

Wiegman’s side return to action in April after lifting the inaugural Arnold Clark Cup during the last international window in February. England beat Spain, Canada and Germany to the silverware.
