Manchester City continue push for third with victory over Leicester City

Manchester City have continued their push for a third-place finish in this season’s Barclays FA Women’s Super League with a 4-0 victory over Leicester City at The Academy Stadium this afternoon.

Caroline Weir, Lauren Hemp, Julie Blakstad and Alex Greenwood got the goals as The Cityzens jumped into the final European qualification spot, at least for the time being.

Manchester City were in complete control from the first whistle and Ellen White went close to scoring inside the opening 10 minutes when she fired against the post. The Cityzens took the lead soon after through Weir who slid the ball home from 12 yards following a Chloe Kelly cut-back.

White and Hemp then both directed shots wide of the target before Manchester City netted a second goal. Blakstad’s cross hit a leg in the box and the ball fell nicely for Hemp who steered her shot into the far corner of the Leicester City net.

Hemp and Blakstad soon combined for the third goal. The England international played in Manchester City’s January transfer window signing who superbly found the far corner of the net with a powerful shot from an acute angle.

Manchester City had to wait until after the hour before adding to their 3-0 first half lead. They were awarded a penalty when Hemp was brought down in the box by visiting keeper Demi Lambourne. Greenwood stepped up to take the spot kick and she sent Lambourne the wrong way from 12 yards.

Weir, Filippa Angeldahl and Georgia Stanway went close to adding to The Cityzens’ lead late on but the scoreline ended 4-0 as Manchester City jumped above Manchester United into third place.

Manchester City are again at home next weekend when they face Brighton & Hove Albion while Leicester City welcome Reading to The King Power Stadium.
