Birmingham City relegated from the FAWSL with defeat at Manchester City

Birmingham City have been relegated from the Barclays FA Women’s Super League after falling to a 6-0 defeat at Manchester City this evening.

The Blues have been fighting a losing battle for a number of weeks and their relegation was finally confirmed this evening with a heavy loss at Manchester City.

Birmingham City were under pressure in the first half but their defence held firm. Lucy Bronze saw an early headed effort cleared off the line before Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw sent a header off target. Bronze again went close just before the break but she was unable to trouble visiting keeper Emily Ramsey as the first half ended goalless.

Manchester City always seemed likely to break the deadlock and they did just that early in the second period. Georgia Stanway hit one from outside of the box which nestled in the back of the net.

Hemp then netted The Cityzens’ second goal from close range before Stanway tapped home a third after Ramsey had saved Hemp’s initial effort.

The goals continued to flow in the closing stages of the match. First, Alanna Kennedy headed home from a corner kick to make it 4-0 to Manchester City before Chloe Kelly produced a simple finish for number five. Laura Coombs got the sixth and final goal of the match with an impressive effort from outside of the box.

Birmingham City were founder members of the inaugural FA Women’s Super League in 2011 but they will now be playing FA Women’s Championship football next season following their relegation this evening. Meanwhile, Manchester City can claim a third-place finish and European qualification with a positive result at Reading on Sunday.
