New contracts for Sunderland’s managerial duo

Sunderland head coach Melanie Reay and her assistant Steph Libbey have signed new contracts with the club according to reports on The Lady Black Cats’ official website.

The pair guided Sunderland to a ninth-place finish in this season’s FA Women’s Championship in what was the club’s first year in the elite game.

It has been reported that head coach Reay has signed a full-time rolling contract which will see her increase the day-to-day responsibilities in her role while assistant Libbey will remain at Sunderland for the next two years on a part-time basis.

After agreeing to become a full-time employee of the club, Reay said “I’m delighted to extend my stay here and become full-time. I’ve had a long affiliation with the football club, and coming across into a full-time role was something I’ve wanted to do for a while.”

Libbey added “I’ve learned a lot in the past year working alongside Mel, and I’m really looking forward to seeing what we can do together moving forward.”

Sunderland were harshly demoted two leagues in 2018 after their application for a Tier Two licence was rejected. The Lady Black Cats were awarded promotion back to the second tier last summer following a successful application for upward club movement.
