Chelsea forward Sam Kerr is one of several Barclays Women’s Super League stars not to be called up by Australia in the latest FIFA window.

The Commonwealth Bank Matildas will face Spain and Portugal in international friendlies later this month as the nation’s preparations for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023 continue.

Australia head coach Tony Gustavsson announced his 24-player squad in the early hours of this morning. He has opted for a more youthful and less experienced line-up, resting several Barclays Women’s Super League players including Chelsea’s Kerr off the back of a hectic domestic season.

In addition to Kerr’s absence, the Australian squad is also missing Arsenal pair Steph Catley and Caitlin Foord, Manchester City’s Alanna Kennedy and Hayley Raso and Tottenham Hotspur’s Kyah Simon. West Ham United’s Mackenzie Arnold and Tameka Yallop, Arsenal’s Lydia Williams and Aston Villa’s Emily Gielnik have made the squad. Goalkeeper Williams will collect her 100th senior international cap should she feature in either game.

Australia will take on two UEFA Women’s EURO-bound nations in Spain and Portugal. The Commonwealth Bank Matildas take on Spain at the Estadio Nuevo Colombino in Huelva on 25 June before facing Portugal at the Estádio António Coimbra da Mota in Estoril on 28 June.
