New Everton boss Sørensen sets top half target in first season in the BWSL

New Everton manager Brian Sørensen says that a return to the top half of the Barclays Women’s Super League table is a realistic target for the club in 2022/2023.

The Blue Girls ended a disastrous 2021/2022 campaign in 10th position in the table. The season started with talk of European qualification but it ultimately ended with the Merseyside club just nine points above bottom club Birmingham City.

Danish coach Sørensen will take charge of the club this summer, picking up the role from Everton’s interim management team. In his first interview, Sørensen said that finishing in the top half of the Barclays Women’s Super League table has to be the aim in his first year in charge.

“We want to climb the table and challenge,” Sørensen told Everton’s official media sources. “First, getting into the top six next year would be good and stabilise.

“In Year Two, it would be good for us to look up and challenge the teams above us. Can we do that over a season in Year Two? Maybe, if we get everything right or maybe, in Year Three. It will also depend on the recruitment that every other team is doing – it is moving one way every year so you just have to keep up with that.”

Sørensen says that he will look for stability from his side in the upcoming season while he expects Everton to be competitive in every game that they play.

He added “I want stability and to see that we are performing day in, day out. In every game that we play, I want us to be competitive for 90 minutes, hopefully, with us on top in most of them.

“We have to be realistic that with recruitment and implementing a different approach, we are not going to always be on top straight away – things will take time to install like the process, the relationship with the players and so on.

“It is about learning each week, being competitive in each game for 90 minutes and if we come out on top in the majority of them, I’m super happy.

“That’s the process that I am going to be looking at. Results matter and we’ve got to win games but the key word is stability, we need to have that every single week.”

Sørensen is joining The Blue Girls from Danish side Fortuna Hjørring, a club where he has enjoyed two separate spells as head coach.
