Celtic have completed the signing of winger Lucy Ashworth-Clifford from Barclays Women’s Championship club Lewes.
The Scottish Women’s Premier League 1 club announced the news via a post on their official Twitter account this morning. The move has seen Celtic boss Fran Alonso return to his former club to secure the services of one of the most talented wide players in the English second tier.
Ashworth-Clifford has spent the last 18 months with Lewes after joining the Sussex club during the January 2021 transfer window. The player has made 29 appearances for The Rookettes in the Barclays Women’s Championship in which she has scored three goals. Ashworth-Clifford has proved to be a dangerous player for Lewes with her attacking play producing goals and providing chances for her teammates.
The winger joined Lewes following a spell combining football with her studies in the United States. As a youngster, Ashworth-Clifford was rated very highly with the player having been on the books of both Manchester United and Manchester City.
Ashworth-Clifford joins a Celtic side that ended the 2021/2022 Scottish Women’s Premier League 1 campaign in third position. Alonso’s side will be keen to improve consistency in 2022/2023 as Celtic aim to challenge for trophies and push for a return to the UEFA Women’s Champions League.
