Manchester City learnt of their Round 1 opponents in the 2022/2023 UEFA Women’s Champions League earlier today when the draw took place in Nyon, Switzerland.
The Cityzens will face Kazakhstani club Tomiris-Turan in the Round 1 semi-finals with the winners taking on Real Madrid or Sturm Graz in the final for a place in Round 2.
Who are Tomiris-Turan? FAWSL Full-Time have been looking at the Kazakhstani club in detail and here are three facts which relate to the UEFA Women’s Champions League minnows.
A new face to the UEFA Women’s Champions League
Tomiris-Turan are one of 10 debutants in the first round of this season’s UEFA Women’s Champions League. The club were runners-up to Kazakhstani champions BIIK-Shymkent in 2021 while Tomiris-Turan are currently in third position in their league in 2022. Tomiris-Turan were the lowest-ranked team which Manchester City could have drawn from their side of the draw based on UEFA co-efficient ranking.
Tomiris-Turan are a side in form
Tomiris-Turan are currently enjoying a four-match winning streak in the Kazakhstani league. The club have recorded victory in those games with a combined winning margin of 28 goals, scoring 30 and conceding just two. Tomiris-Turan’s biggest win in this calendar year came in April when they defeated Jas Sunkar 12-0 in the Kazakhstani league.
Tomiris-Turan still awaiting domestic title
With the club being in the shadow of BIIK-Shymkent, Tomiris-Turan are yet to match their more well-known league rivals. The club have only burst onto the scene in the Kazakhstani game in the last couple of seasons, providing some much-needed competition for BIIK-Shymkent and FC Okhetpes, a side which faced Arsenal in Round 1 of last season’s UEFA Women’s Champions League. Tomiris-Turan are still awaiting their first league title but the club is in its infancy in terms of stature in the domestic game in Kazakhstan.
Manchester City’s UEFA Women’s Champions League Round 1 semi-final tie against Tomiris-Turan is scheduled to take place on 18 August 2022.
