England have eased to a 4-0 victory over Switzerland in Zürich this evening in their final match before the UEFA Women’s EURO.
Alessia Russo, Georgia Stanway, Beth England and Jill Scott were all on target for the Lionesses as they made it three wins from three in their preparation matches ahead of this summer’s tournament.
England started the game brightly in Zürich and home keeper Seraina Friedli came up with a big save to deny Fran Kirby when one-on-one early on. Lauren Hemp then fired straight at Friedli before the Swiss keeper scrambled to prevent a Russo effort from creeping over the line.
Rachel Daly then saw a headed effort cleared off the line by Ana-Maria Crnogorčević as the first half ended goalless.
The Lionesses took the lead early in the second period when Daly’s looped cross found Russo who headed home at the back post.
Hemp then almost slid home the second goal from a Kelly cross but failed to get the required connection on the ball before Friedli superbly tipped England’s close range header over the bar.
England were then awarded a penalty kick for an alleged foul in the box after Hemp’s volley had been blocked on the line. Stanway took the spot kick and successfully found the bottom corner from 12 yards.
The Lionesses netted a third through England who headed home from a long cross from the right. Fellow substitute Scott then added some extra sparkle to the scoreline deep in second half injury time when she headed home from close range to cap-off a fine 4-0 victory for Sarina Wiegman’s side.
England will begin their UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 campaign against Austria at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.
