Birmingham City announce quartet of departures

Birmingham City have this evening announced the news that Emily Whelan, Lucy Whipp, Sarah Ewens and Cecilie Sandvej are all leaving the club at the end of their contracts.

FAWSL Full-Time were informed of the news via an official club press release from the Blues.

All four players made contributions towards Birmingham City’s failed survival bid in the Barclays Women’s Super League this season. Republic of Ireland international Emily Whelan made 19 league appearances for Darren Carter’s side while Whipp and Ewens were both fielded on 11 occasions by the Blues. Danish defender Sandvej made five appearances in the league with an injury severely reducing her game time.

Seven players have now exited St Andrew’s since Birmingham City’s relegation to the Barclays Women’s Championship. The Blues announced last month that goalkeeper Marie Hourihan was being released while loanee Lisa Robertson returned to parent club Celtic. Birmingham City wanted to retain the services of Greek international attacker Veatriki Sarri, however, the player opted against extending her deal with the club.

Birmingham City will play in the second tier for the first time in the modern era in 2022/2023. The club were founder members of the old FA Women’s Super League back in 2011 and had remained in the top flight ever since prior to their recent relegation.
