Manchester United and Netherlands international midfielder Jackie Groenen is in self-isolation after testing positive for COVID-19.
The 27-year-old Tilburg-born midfielder is understood to have recorded her positive test this morning with The Dutch Football Association, the KNVB, confirming the news. Groenen will now isolate from the Dutch squad until she records a negative test.
Groenen started for The Netherlands in last night’s 1-1 draw with Sweden at Bramall Lane, Sheffield. The player played the full 90 minutes of the match for Mark Parsons’ side as they put down a solid marker in their opening group game at this summer’s UEFA Women’s EURO 2022.
A poor first half display saw The Netherlands go in at half-time trailing 1-0 to a Jonna Andersson goal. The Orange Lionesses were better in the second period and they levelled matters just after the interval through former Arsenal midfielder Jill Roord.
Groenen will now miss The Netherlands’ next group match against Portugal at the Leigh Sports Village on Wednesday while there is a chance that she could also be missing for their fixture against Switzerland back at Bramall Lane next Sunday.
The Dutch Football Association are expected to provide a further update on Groenen’s condition once she is in a position to safety return to the squad.
