Liverpool confirm signing of centre-back Flaherty

Liverpool have announced their second signing of the summer with the arrival of former Arsenal, Chelsea and West Ham United defender Gilly Flaherty.

The Reds announced the news via their official club website. The centre-back arrives on Merseyside after being released by former club West Ham United following the expiration of her contract.

Flaherty reunites with former manager Matt Beard after the pair previously worked together at West Ham United. Flaherty is the second signing for Liverpool since their promotion back to the Barclays Women’s Super League after the arrival of Emma Koivisto earlier this month.

After completing her move to Liverpool, Flaherty said “It feels great. When I left West Ham I was unsure of where I was going and then it only took one chat with Beardy and Russ (Fraser) to know how exciting it is to be here and the vision of this club as well. I’m so grateful I’ve been given the chance to join the family.”

The defender will don the number 25 shirt for her new club and arrives on Merseyside with a wealth of top-flight experience which could give Liverpool an edge if they are to maintain their status in the top tier beyond next season.

With the additions of Koivisto and Flaherty to the squad, Beard is clearly targeting players with recent Barclays Women’s Super League experience. Merged with the quality that they displayed on their journey to the Barclays Women’s Championship title last season, this mixture of experience and flair could make them a strong outfit in that battle to avoid the drop.
